History

Montauk has a rich and colorful history and is, today, a beautiful location to explore. It is located at the tip of the South Fork peninsula of Long Island and is 118 miles east of Midtown Manhattan. It has actually been used in the past as an army, navy, coast guard and air force base. The famous Montauk Point Light was the first lighthouse in New York state and is it the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the US.

There are six state parks in the Montauk Colony area. Fishing is one of the favorite past times here and it is home to the largest commercial and recreational fishing fleet in the state of New York.
Montauk comes from the name from the Montaukett tribe that lived in the area. In 1614, the Dutch explorer Adriaen Block first met the tribe at Montauk point.

In the census of 2000, there were 3,851 people living in the Montauk Colony area. The Montauk area is considered a beach resort and has many restaurants, bed and breakfasts and hotels.
